CLASSICAL MUSIC

AMERICAN MODERN ENSEMBLE:

“THE MUSIC OF STEVEN STUCKY”

Stucky, the winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Music, has steadily risen to become a major figure in American composition, a position earned because of his music’s singular combination of fastidious craftsmanship and coloristic flair. The ensemble (which features the violinist Curtis Macomber and the pianists Blair McMillen and Molly Morkoski, among others) offers a survey that includes such works as “Boston Fancies,” “Ad Parnassum,” and the Piano Quartet. (Tenri Cultural Institute, 43A W. 13th St. 800-838-3006. May 27-28 at 8.)

AMERICAN MODERN ENSEMBLE

(Tomorrow and Sunday)

This chamber group, founded in 2005, is devoted to American music, particularly works by living composers. Its third and last program for this season is devoted to Steven Stucky, a composer who writes in an inviting, eclectic style and, in his best works, uses instrumental color and traditional forms excitingly. Mr. Stucky, who won the Pulitzer Prize last year, will be represented by a Piano Quartet; "Boston Fancies"; "Ad Parnassum"; "Partita-Pastorale, after J.S.B"; and "Album Leaves."

At 8 p.m., Tenri Cultural Institute of New York, 43A West 13th Street, Greenwich Village, (212) 645-2800; $15; $10 for students and 65+.
