Classical Music Listing  (April 29, 2005)

BLAIR McMILLEN (Wednesday) This prodigiously talented and adventurous young pianist is known mostly for championing contemporary music. On this program he plays either original or arranged works from the Faenza manuscript of early Italian keyboard music. Not surprisingly, he also gives the premieres of works by Fabrizio De Rossi Re and Matthew Greenbaum based on the manuscript.

8 p.m., Casa Italiana at Columbia University, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue, between 116th and 118th Streets, Morningside Heights, (212) 854-1623, $12, $5 for students and 65+.  (Tommasini)

The Week Ahead: May 1-7 (May 1, 2005)

CLASSICAL MUSIC
Allan Kozinn

Like Mr. Kremer, the fine young pianist BLAIR MCMILLEN has adopted adventurousness as a career strategy. In addition to several concerts a season with the new-music ensemble COUNTER)INDUCTION, he periodically offers recitals that are thoughtfully programmed and beautifully played. Even by his own standards, though, the program Mr. McMillen is playing Wednesday at CASA ITALIANA, at Columbia University, is unusual. Some of the music comes from the FAENZA CODEX, a collection of Italian keyboard music from the early 1400's. For perspective, he will play contemporary works by FABRIZIO DI ROSSI RE and MATTHEW GREENBAUM based on the Faenza collection.

8, Casa Italiana, Columbia University, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue, at 117th Street, (212) 854-1623.
